What is subtraction?

Subtraction is the process of taking one number away from another. It’s a way to describe what happens when something gets removed or eliminated. Two other words for subtraction are minus and difference. If you ever see those words in a math problem you should immediately think, “I need to subtract!”

What is the best way to teach subtraction?

When students are first learning to subtract they need to visualize it. Use objects they’re familiar with, and try the following activity. Set out four of their favorite toys on a table. Have them count the toys out loud, then place one of the toys on the floor. Ask, “Now that I removed one toy, how many are left?” When they say, “Three!” Say, “That’s right! Four minus one is three! Can you say that with me?” Then repeat “Four minus one is three,” until they say it correctly with you. The key when beginning subtraction is to remain patient and keep things fun.
