What is PEMDAS and How Do You Apply It?
The order of operations is a set of rules used in mathematics to clarify which procedures should be performed first when evaluating a given mathematical expression. It’s crucial for ensuring that everyone arrives at the same answer. Here’s a breakdown:
What is PEMDAS?
It’s a standard sequence for performing calculations in an expression with multiple operations.
Commonly remembered by the acronyms:
PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction.
BODMAS: Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.
How to use it:
- Parentheses/Brackets: First, perform any operations inside parentheses ( ) or brackets [ ]. If there are nested parentheses, work from the innermost set outward.
- Exponents/Orders: Next, evaluate any exponents (powers) or roots.
- Multiplication and Division: Then, perform multiplication and division operations, working from left to right. This means that if division comes before multiplication when reading left to right, you do the division first.
- Addition and Subtraction: Finally, perform addition and subtraction operations, also working from left to right. Again, if subtraction comes before addition, you do the subtraction first.
Order of Operations Tips:
- Multiplication and division have equal priority, as do addition and subtraction.
- When operations have equal priority, proceed from left to right.
