Fractions Explained

There are two parts to a fraction, the numerator and the denominator.

The numerator of a fraction is the number that appears on the top part of the fraction line. It represents the number of equal parts being considered or used. In a fraction, the numerator tells us how many parts of the whole we are interested in.

The denominator of a fraction is the number that appears on the bottom part of the fraction line. It represents the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided.

Fractions can be either a fraction of a whole or a fraction of a set.

Fraction of a Whole:
- This refers to a fraction where the whole represents a single entity or unit. The numerator represents the number of parts of that whole, and the denominator represents how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
- Example: If you have a pizza divided into 8 slices, and you eat 3 slices, the fraction of the pizza you have eaten is 3/8. Here, the whole (pizza) is one entity.
Fraction of a Set:
- This refers to a fraction where the whole represents a collection of items or objects (a set). The numerator represents the number of specific items or elements taken from that set, and the denominator represents the total number of items in the set.
- Example: If you have a bag of marbles containing 20 marbles, and 5 of them are red, the fraction of red marbles in the set is 5/20 or 1/4. Here, the whole (set) is a collection of marbles.
