Subtract with Number Lines

Welcome to our subtract with number lines worksheets!

Subtraction is the act of “taking away” or “finding the difference.” In the worksheets below, students will begin understanding the process of subtraction by using number lines.

To begin, they’ll locate the first number on the number line, place their pencil there, then hop backward (to the left) the second number of spaces to find the solution. We’ve also included worksheets that provide the starting number and the solution. In those worksheets, students will have to find the “hop back” number.

How to Subtract with Number Lines

How do you subtract using a number line?

Step 1: Place your pencil on the first number of the subtraction problem.
Step 2: Hop backward the second number of spaces.
Step 3: Draw an arrow where you end. This is your solution!

What is the purpose of using a number line for subtraction?

Number lines help students visualize the process of subtraction.
By placing their pencil on the starting number and moving it (or hopping it) backward, they take an abstract concept (subtraction) and make it concrete or tangible.
When students are first learning subtraction, using a number line allows them to see the process of taking away. Eventually, the process will move off the page and into their mind. Number lines help train the mind for mental math.
